This immersive one-day oil painting workshop is designed for both beginners and experienced artists who want to strengthen their technical skills while exploring still life painting in a supportive, studio-based environment. Participants will work from an avocado still life and have the opportunity to experiment with oil paint on both canvas and paper, finishing the day with a second still life project.
Workshop Schedule
10:30 – 12:00 | Avocado Still Life — Oil on Canvas Focus on foundational oil painting techniques while working on canvas. Core techniques include:
· Layering (glazing) to build spatial depth and luminosity
· Color mixing with emphasis on hue, value, and intensity
· Working with a limited palette
12:00 – 12:45 | Lunch Break Bring your own lunch. A refrigerator will be available.
12:45 – 2:00 | Avocado Still Life — Oil on Paper Explore the unique properties of oil painting on paper. Core techniques include:
· Preparing paper for oil paint
· Working with a limited palette
· Advantages and limitations of paper compared to canvas and panel
· Archival considerations
2:00 – 3:30 | Free Choice — Still Life on Canvas Apply the day’s lessons to one of the following 3 still life photos.
Topics include:
· Still life composition
· Light and shadow
· Color theory
· Group critique and peer feedback
This workshop offers a balanced blend of structured instruction and creative freedom, making it an excellent opportunity to deepen your understanding of oil painting materials, techniques, and visual decision-making.
