Texarkana College’s Community Education Department is proud to partner with Tinnin Farms to offer a unique, high‑demand Horseshoeing School designed to launch students directly into a rewarding career in the equine industry. With over 70 years of combined experience, our instructors bring extensive knowledge in horseshoeing, training, breeding, and coaching—providing students with an unmatched learning environment rooted in real‑world expertise.

Course Overview

This intensive 6‑week program meets 40 hours per week and equips students with the hands‑on skills, professional tools, and practical training needed to begin working immediately upon completion. Farriers are in high demand across the horse industry and surrounding regions, making this course an excellent opportunity for those seeking a stable and profitable career path.

Students will gain foundational and advanced skills in:

Fundamentals of Horse Shoeing

  • Understanding horse anatomy and identifying common hoof and gait problems
  • Safely handling and evaluating horses
  • Trimming, balancing, and preparing the hoof
  • Forging, shaping, and fitting horseshoes
  • Applying shoes using proper technique and safety standards

Fundamentals of Blacksmithing

  • Constructing horseshoes
  • Forging shoes by hand
  • Working with anvils, forges, and basic blacksmithing tools
  • Heat management and metalworking techniques

Basic Horsemanship

  • Safe horse handling
  • Reading horse behavior
  • Building confidence while working around horses
  • Understanding the needs of various breeds and disciplines

Training Locations

Instruction takes place both on the Texarkana College campus and on-site at Tinnin Farms, giving students a blend of classroom learning, shop practice, and real-world experience with live horses.

Tools & Equipment

All tools needed for the course are included in the tuition, and students will keep their full tool set upon graduation—providing everything needed to begin work right away.

Completion & Career Readiness

By the end of the 6-week course, students will have:

  • Completed all required hands-on training hours
  • Built the skills to safely and professionally shoe horses
  • Gained work-ready experience with live animals
  • Received the tools and confidence necessary to start a career immediately
